Installing a wooden wall map is straightforward, but a few details make the difference between a result that looks professional and one that needs to be redone. This guide covers everything: tools, methods, typical timelines, and the mistakes most people make the first time.
What Comes in the Box
Every FACTURA map ships with everything needed for installation:
- Map fragments (typically 2–4 sections depending on size)
- Double-sided mounting tape or standoff brackets (depending on map type)
- Power adapter and remote control (for LED versions)
- Illustrated installation guide
For XXL and XXXL sizes, a backing board is included to support the larger surface area.
Tools You Will Need
- Tape measure or ruler
- Pencil or painter’s tape for marking
- Spirit level (or a level app on your phone)
- For bracket mounting: drill, wall plugs, and screws appropriate to your wall type
Step 1: Mark the Position
Mark the center point of where the map will hang. Use painter’s tape to outline the full rectangle of the map dimensions directly on the wall — this lets you see the actual scale before committing. Adjust position as needed.
Standard hanging height: the bottom edge of the map should sit at approximately 150–170 cm from the floor, or 20–25 cm above any furniture beneath it. For maps hung above a sofa or bed, the gap between the furniture and the bottom edge of the map matters for visual balance.
Step 2: Lay Out the Fragments
Before mounting anything, lay all fragments on the floor in the correct arrangement according to the guide. Confirm every piece is present and that you understand how they connect.
Step 3: Mounting with Double-Sided Tape (Sizes up to XL)
Apply strips of double-sided tape to the back of each fragment — at each corner and midway along each edge. Remove the protective backing and press the fragment firmly against the wall for 30–60 seconds.
Start with the corner or central fragment and work outward. Use a level on each piece before pressing it permanently. Double-sided tape holds extremely well on smooth painted surfaces. On wallpaper or textured walls, standoff brackets are the better option.
Important: once pressed, double-sided tape is very difficult to reposition without damage. Mark your positions carefully before removing the backing.
Step 4: Mounting on Standoff Brackets (LED Versions and Large Sizes)
Standoff brackets are screwed into the wall using plugs and screws. Mark bracket positions with a pencil, check level, drill holes, insert plugs, and screw in the brackets. The map then hangs on the brackets and sits 3–5 cm from the wall — this gap is what allows the LED lighting to create the floating glow effect.
For concrete or brick walls, use a hammer drill and appropriate masonry plugs. For drywall, use drywall anchors rated for the weight of the map.
Step 5: Connect the LED (If Applicable)
The LED strip is pre-installed in the map. After hanging, connect the power adapter to a standard 220V outlet. For RGB maps, sync the remote according to the instruction sheet. Test all lighting modes before finishing.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping the level check. Even a small tilt is obvious on a large map. Always use a level — visual estimation is not accurate enough.
- Pressing tape without marking first. Double-sided tape is permanent on first contact. Mark your positions with a pencil before removing the backing film.
- Not allowing enough gap for LED. LED maps need to sit away from the wall. Confirm that your brackets are the correct depth before drilling.
- Attempting XXL alone. Maps above 200 cm wide should be hung by two people. One holds and levels, one marks and presses.
Installation Time
- Sizes S–M on tape: 20–30 minutes
- Sizes L–XL on brackets: 45–60 minutes
- Sizes XXL–XXXL with backing board: 90–120 minutes (two people recommended)
